How can I safely shop on the Internet?
Using a credit card online:
Many people use their ATM/debit cards to make purchases on the Internet. It can be safe - if you follow some precautions, but it's still risky. Most experts suggest that you do not use your ATM/debit card online.
If at all possible, use a credit card instead. If you frequently use the Internet for online shopping, dedicate one credit card to use only for Internet purchases. And again, always monitor your purchases weekly, or closely review your monthly statement.
Check out these tips:
. Ensure you have an updated firewall and virus protections on your computer or the computer you're using for the purchase.
. Always use a trusted Internet browser to view the Web site where you want to make a purchase.
. Do not use hyperlinks or attachments in e-mails, or unfamiliar Web sites.
. Research the company you're doing business with and its Web site if you have not used it in the past.
. Do not use a Web sites that is not secure to make a purchase or to transfer sensitive personal information
Online auctions:
Online auctions are relatively safe - if you know what you're doing.. But, with so many fraudsters online, there are risks. Educate yourself about online fraud before you play on the auction Web sites.. Research the vendor and then pay by credit card or with a secure service, such as PayPal.. If you pay by credit card and are defrauded, you are protected under the credit card consumer laws (as discussed in previous Tips of the Month). With a credit card purchase, the money has not been removed from your bank account and you can contest the charges.. For additional protections, and an advocate if something does go wrong, consider using PayPal, the largest online payment service provider. PayPal regulates its authorized vendors and guarantees products purchased on eBay. Many businesses, cities, utilities and online businesses now accept PayPal for online payments.. You pay PayPal directly with your credit card, or electronically through your bank account if you wish. If you attach a credit card to your PayPal account, you get two types of protection against fraud.. Since PayPal pays the vendor directly, your credit card number or bank account number is never seen by the vendor. If the vendor is a crook or an identity thief, he cannot attack or misuse your accounts.. Note: The Pendleton Police Department does not endorse PayPal or any online payment service..
There are still risks and liabilities associated with online transactions, even if you use a payment service, so use at your own risk....
