Beware of fake tax refund emails seeking card details

BUSINESSES and consumers have been warned over a tax scam designed to obtain people's banking details via a fake e-mail from HM Revenue and Customs.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has urged the public to think twice before providing personal bank and credit card information, following a scam designed to obtain people's credit card details by promising a tax refund.

Consumers and businesses are being targeted with a fraudulent e-mail pretending to come from HMRC, asking recipients to submit their credit card details to receive a tax refund through their credit card account.

The bogus e-mail is one of the most frequently reported fraud attempts to HMRC.
